Get Kissable Lips with this Top Treatment

Dealing with thinning lips isn’t often a fun time. Fortunately, dermal fillers can help you get your youthful, kissable lips back with just a few injections. Here’s what you need to know about using dermal filler lip injections.

Are Lip Fillers and Botox the Same?

No. It’s incredibly important to remember that dermal fillers and Botox are not the same thing. While both of these cosmetic dermatology treatments are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and can be used around the mouth, the truth is that they operate quite differently. While Botox injections temporarily paralyze the muscles in your face that cause wrinkles like crow’s feet or furrow lines in your forehead, dermal fillers work to plump up your lips and reduce the appearance of wrinkles by filling, plumping, and overall enhancing the smooth appearance of an area on the face. In this case, you’re looking to restore volume and smoothness to your lips. If you want to compare the two, it’s important to note that it’s typically much safer to use lip fillers than it is to use Botox on the lips due to some of the side effects that an improper Botox injection can cause around the mouth.

How do Lip Fillers Work?

For most lip fillers, the primary ingredients typically include collagen or hyaluronic acid. Collagen-based products like Perlane lip filler work primarily to plump up the lips. While the results are often excellent and long-lasting, hyaluronic acid can give lip fillers the added benefit of holding lots of moisture in the injection site, which can contribute to a more natural-looking end result. In addition to Perlane lip injections, products such as Juvederm and Restylane are popular among people who are looking to remedy the issue of thinning lips.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

How long your lip fillers last typically depends on a few factors, including how well you care for them, your desired results, and the kind of lip filler you end up choosing. If you have a sensitivity to a particular lip filler, your results may fade a bit more quickly. It’s in your best interest to work closely with your dermatologist to determine what the best lip filler for your needs is. But in the vast majority of cases, your lip fillers will typically last anywhere from four to six months or more, depending on the factors listed above.

What Happens After My Lip Injections?

After your procedure is complete, you can typically expect a little bit of redness and swelling at the injection site. You may also experience a little bit of pain and tenderness. Fortunately, those side effects should only last around 24 hours or so. In addition, you’ll be asked to follow a set of aftercare instructions. In some cases, your doctor will ask you to massage your lips in a certain way to ensure they hold their shape. Whatever the instruction, make sure you follow it closely to ensure you get the best, most natural-looking results possible.
