Facing These Three Summer Skin Problems

Summer is arguably one of the nicest times of the year weather-wise, but are you prepared to deal with common summer skin issues like sun damage? Here are a few common summer skin problems and what you can do about them.

Sunburn

Sunburn isn’t fun to experience, and it can cause serious harm to your skin. Not only are UVA and UVB rays tied directly to the development of certain types of skin cancer, but too much exposure can prematurely age your skin. If you want to avoid sunburn, staying inside during the hottest times of the day when the sun’s rays are most intense is one of the best ways to avoid sun damage. And if you can’t get inside, one of the simplest things you can do to ensure you’re protected from sun damage is seek out a shady spot to lounge in. And of course, sunscreen is your best bet for avoiding sun damaged skin this season. Under normal circumstances, you should use a sunscreen that has at least SPF 15 as well as broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. If you’re particularly concerned or you have sensitive skin, you may want to apply sunscreen with a higher SPF. In addition, make sure you’re reapplying your sunscreen every two hours or so if you plan on spending the whole day outside.

Acne Breakouts

While the weather is certainly nicer during the summer, it’s also much hotter in some instances. So when you have acne-prone skin and you’re out in the hot weather, you may experience more frequent breakouts. This is largely a result of the fact that your skin produces more oil and sweat when it’s hot outside. And when you produce more sweat and oil on your skin, there’s a bigger chance that dirt and bacteria will get trapped in your pores and contribute to acne breakouts. The best way to prevent acne breakouts during the summer is to stay on top of your daily skincare routine. If it was working for you before the weather got warmer, odds are it will still work for you now! You might need to make a few small adjustments, like washing your face twice daily instead of once daily. In addition, you should make a point to wash your skin every time you sweat. It may also benefit you to opt for a lighter moisturizer for the summer months that doesn’t trap quite as much moisture in your skin.

Heat Rash

Of all the annoying skin issues you could experience during the summer, heat rash is definitely close to the top of the list. Fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest skin issues to prevent during the summer months. Heat rash usually takes the form of a red, bumpy rash on your skin and most often forms in areas where skin rubs against skin or tight clothing. Constricting or heavy clothing can often contribute to this skin rash, as well. And while the rash will go away on its own in a few days without any treatment, keeping your skin well-aerated and cool can help speed the process along. In order to avoid this condition, make sure you’re wearing light, breathable clothing during the summer months. In addition, try to minimize the number of places where your skin rubs together. Staying cool can also help you avoid this common summer skin condition.
