Cosmetic Dermatology: Does One Dermal Filler Last Longer Than Others?

Wrinkles might be a natural part of the aging process, but that doesn’t mean you have to like them. Fortunately, dermal fillers can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. But how long do different dermal fillers last? Here’s what you need to know.

Don’t Confuse Dermal Fillers with Botox

First and foremost, remember that dermal fillers and Botox are not the same thing. While both of these cosmetic dermatology treatments are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, they operate quite differently. Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles in your face that cause wrinkles like crow’s feet or furrow lines in your forehead. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, reduce the appearance of wrinkles by filling, plumping, and overall enhancing the smooth appearance of an area on the face. So if you’re considering dermal fillers, make sure you understand that Botox and dermal fillers are very different cosmetic dermatology treatments.

Juvederm

Juvederm represents a collection of dermal fillers which can be formulated for use on various areas of the face. One type of Juvederm may be used to plump and contour the cheeks and smooth smile or frown lines around the mouth. Another type of Juvederm might be used to plump up the lips or soften up vertical lip lines. It’s important to note that hyaluronic acid is one of the main ingredients in Juvederm. This substance, which is naturally created by the body, starts depleting with age. This ingredient also provides an advantage for Juvederm. Since hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, Juvederm doesn’t pose the risk of allergic reactions. The amount of time Juvederm lasts for varies — in the vast majority of cases this filler can last anywhere from six months to over a year (18 months).

Restylane

As with Juvederm, there are different types of Restylane that can be injected as a wrinkle reducing treatment in multiple facial areas. The original blend of Restylane can help smooth wrinkles and it can help plump up thinner lips. Restylane Lyft is a much thicker formula and is most commonly used to treat deep or severe wrinkles and volume loss in the cheeks. In addition, this formula can be used to add volume to the backs of hands. There’s also a specific formula that’s used to enhance lips. Again, one of the main ingredients in this dermal filler is hyaluronic acid. This makes it an excellent candidate for you if you haven’t had dermal fillers before. If you’re concerned with how long it will last, the results are similar to that of Juvederm. In most cases, Restylane typically lasts up to 18 months. Results in the lips can last up to six months.

Sculptra Aesthetic

If you want to reduce eye wrinkles, this is not the dermal filler for you. While this dermal filler is approved for cosmetic use, it is not used around the eyes or lips. Instead, Scultpra is used to build up cheek appearance, fill in sunken areas of the face, and to reduce the appearance of deep lines. It does take multiple treatments to see optimal results. The number of treatments you’ll need will depend on the extent of facial aging that needs treatment. While you may need repeat treatments before you see your desired results, this dermal filler can last up to two years.
